Suspected Typhoid outbreak forces DK Technical School to close … Management claims closure is on account of student fatigue

David Kaunda National Technical Secondary School has been forced to close abruptly after over 190 cases of suspected Typhoid were recorded two weeks ago.

A check by Daily Revelation Newspaper at the school premises found some students’ luggages packed by the drive way awaiting for transportation to leave the school.

The school appeared deserted as most students had already vacated the premises.

Interactions with some of the students revealed that the sudden closure was as a result of an outbreak of Typhoid.

“We are told to go home because the school needs to be disinfected. About two weeks ago, the school recorded an outbreak of Typhoid and about 192 students were affected. These students who were affected were quarantined and so, we are closing for the next 11 days,” said one of the students, sentiments echoed by their colleagues.

A memo addressed to parents by DK management stated that the school is closing ahead of the long weekend.

The memo further stated that tentatively, students would  be expected back in school by July 7, 2024.

“Remember that we have a long term this time around, and also that learners didn’t have adequate time to rest during the last holiday. As a result, children have fatigue and need some rest, brief as it may be. Tentatively, children will be expected back in school on 7th July 2024,” stated the memo.

Efforts to speak to the headteacher, deputy headteacher and other school authorities failed as they were out of school, which appeared deserted.
