UPND policies bearing fruit, says miners leader

UPND policies on mining are bearing fruit, says National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) president Saul Simunjika.

Simunjika said the commencement of nikel mining at Kalumbila Mine will go a long way in creating employment opportunities.

He said the commencement of nikel mining at Kalumbila Mine is a demonstration that the UPND government’s policy on mining is bearing fruits.

“I am told that the minister of mines is (was) officiating at the nikel mining at Kalumbila today, though we have not been invited. But that project will go a long way in creating jobs for the local people. This is a clear demonstration that the current government’s policy on mining is bearing fruits,” Simujika said.

Simujika, however, said the UPND administration should expedite the process leading to the full operationalisation of KCM and Mopani Copper Mines.

He said that the full operationalisation of KCM and Mopani Copper Mines would ramp up production at the two mining companies.

“On KCM and Mopani Copper Mines, we are patiently waiting for the government to give a clear roadmap on the two mines. We can only call on government to speed up the process leading to the full operationalisation of KCM and Mopani Copper Mines. Once these two become fully operational, there will be increased production, leading to improved conditions of service for workers. And, ultimately, more employment opportunities for the people,” said Simujika.
