USA doesn’t need to accuse Govt of failing to fight corruption to stop aid deliveries – Muhabi

By Mubanga Mubanga

Zambia We want spokesperson Muhabi Lungu says the American government does not need to accuse the UPND government of corruption in order for them to stop giving aid to the country.

In an interview, Lungu said if the American government wanted to stop giving aid to Zambia, they could not use corruption as a scapegoat, but rather just stop.

He added that US President Donald Trump was very clear in terms of why he was withdrawing certain aid to other countries.

“You know, a guilty person or an accused person it is rare that they accept that they are guilty. … What would be the motive of the US, just to say that if they wanted to stop aid, they would have just stopped it,” Lungu said. “They didn’t have to give an excuse. There are many countries that have stopped giving aid and, they have said that our budget and foreign policy have changed. And that is what we are going to do.”

Lungu also said the UPND should not deny that it was running a corrupt government, because it was clear for all to see.

“We know, there were trucks that were unaccounted for and drugs have been found in people’s personal shops,” Lungu said. “So, to start denying that this doesn’t happen, is trying to think that the Zambian people are dumb. I think that what they should just do, is (say) investigate.”

However, Lungu said the fight against corruption in the UPND had not decreased, arguing they were just good in terms of concealing corruption.

“The level of concealment has improved and of course the quality of the denials has also been increased,” said Lungu.
