WE ARE NOT CLEANING LUSAKA FOR YELLEN, CLAIMS CHUSHI

By Isaac Zulu

Minister of Information and Media Chushi Kasanda says the cleaning exercise that the UPND administration has embarked on has nothing to do with the coming of United States of America Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Kasanda was asked by Daily Revelation if the expected cleanup is in preparation for the visit of Treasury Secretary (Finance minister) Yellen in the same manner the city was cleaned up for the African Union summit, but no sooner had the visitors left than the city, particularly the central business district, retained its filthy outlook. Kasanda was also asked if Lusaka will now only be cleaned in preparation for the important visitors to the country, while encouraging vendors to dirty the place immediately afterwards due to mainly political considerations.

Responding, Kasanda, who is also Chisamba member of parliament, said that the cleaning exercise of Lusaka City is an going exercise that was initiated by Cabinet and aimed at ensuring that the Capital City and other districts remain clean and health.

“The cleaning up exercise of Lusaka City and other cities as well as districts is a continuous exercise that has nothing to do with the coming of Janet. It is just a coincidence and should not be attributed to the coming of cooperating partners and foreign investors. That is the government’s position. And believe me you, this is a continuous and countrywide programme that has been embarked on by the New Dawn government.”

She stressed that speculations that the UPND administration is embarking on some cleaning up exercise in order to create an impression that the country is clean and health are misplaced.

“Those are just misplaced speculations,” said Kasanda, who also referred this reporter to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Garry Nkombo.

But when reached for a comment, Nkombo could not pick calls on several occasions.

But that is what we do as Zambians. We clean our houses when we are expecting visitors. We hide all the urine-soaked blankets from view and we make sure that no one messes up the sitting room. nothing strange here. When the visitors have gone, we can go back to our ungodly filth.
