The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it has not yet released the road map for the 2026 general elections, and wonders where the Sociality Party (SP) is basing its call for the commission to secure consensus before introducing electronic voting.
In a statement, SP media director, Brian Hapunda called on the ECZ to secure stakeholder consensus before introducing electronic voting in the 2026 presidential and general elections.
Hapunda said it was surprising that the ECZ was insisting on introducing electronic voting without engaging stakeholders in a country where only 35 percent of citizens were technologically savvy.
He warned that ECZ should exercise caution before introducing electronic voting considering that 65 percent of the citizens who are not digitally savvy would be disenfranchised.
“As Socialist Party, we can only view this as panic and maneuvers by ECZ to rig the 2026 elections through electronic voting. This is a plan simply by the ruling party to rig these elections taking advantage of the small number that are digitally savvy and this is unfortunate,” Hapunda said.
But speaking to Daily Revelation, Kasaro said the commission is yet to release its road map for 2026 elections and that so far, there has been no official statement from the ECZ.
Kasaro wondered where the party was basing its statement on.
He added that it would be premature for the ECZ to even comment on the issue.
“The beginning point would be that the commission is yet to release its road map pertaining to the 2026 elections and I think that thus far, there has not been any official statement from the commission concerning electronic voting, so therefore, it would be premature. We are wondering where that…what the basis of that statement would be then. The commission has not pronounced itself on electronic voting,” said Kasaro.
