Socialist party vice-president Dr Cosmas Musumali says the UPND government has failed to deliver, hence their decision to start destroying the Socialist party.
Speaking during a press briefing at the party secretariat on Monday, Dr Musumali said the UPND were targeting SP leader Dr Fred M’membe in their attacks because they knew that he was one of the formidable members of the opposition.
“So that is what they are good at, they have failed to deliver, now they are going out there trying to destroy the party. But, they are also targeting president M’membe viciously. There have been not less than six different writings, insinuations about him. Their social media vuvuzela’s are on rampage,” Dr Musumali said. “It is like on the drug which we used to call mandrax. They have been given that, they are on rampage discrediting Dr Fred M’membe. The question is why him? Why him? Why not pick somebody else ,and say we are going to criticise this one or that one? So when you are attacking, you don’t attack the weak forces. You want to give where you feel, if a chance was given to this one, we will be in problems.”
Dr Musumali said the UPND attacks on Dr M’membe had been systematic in the past few weeks.
“A number of you might not have noticed, that there have been systematic attacks from the UPND against the Socialist party, and specifically against Dr Fred M’membe. They are systematic, ridiculous at sometimes, very insulting in certain cases. But they are there. But, the UPND has also started attacking the work we are undertaking with the other political players,” Dr Musumali said. “You have seen articles on social media, about divisions within the people trying a united front, who is fighting who. The truth is, all these are lies. The UPND does not want the opposition political parties to unite. And they are doing everything possible to ensure that unity does not come about.”
Dr Musumali said there was a need for the opposition to unite.
He added that the UPND had divided the country on tribal lines.
“What is needed is unity of purpose, or rather purpose that gets us winning those elections. And winning elections is about voting the UPND out. Again the agenda we have been given by the masses. We fight for more democracy, we want an economy for Zambians, not multinationals,” Dr Musumali said. “We want a One Zambia, One Nation. Not where we are divided because you are a Banda, you are a Chilufya, your sir name and you become a second class citizen. We want a judiciary that works like a judiciary. Is that asking for too much? Those are the foundation of any civilised society.”
