It’s laughable! So Edgar is back to fight for the same democracy he’s been fighting against?

By Daily Revelation Editor

It is just absurd that Edgar Lungu is claiming that he is coming back to fight for the same democracy that he has been fighting against in PF, and during the time he was in power. Everyone remembers how Edgar used his power during his presidency to put a nail into the MMD political coffin. Everyone remembers how he made it difficult for opposition parties to hold meetings, especially for his main opponent Hakainde Hichilema.

Edgar has come back to active politics as PF president. So he announced it last Saturday during the memorial commemorations of his predecessor Michael Chilufya Sata.

Edgar said he was coming back to save the party against the war that has been unleashed on it by the UPND administration and their ‘stooges’ to obliterate the opposition party.

Edgar, has of course his democratic rights to participate in the politics of this country in any way he wishes and it will be stupid of anyone in the UPND administration and any other interest group to attempt to fight that inalienable right he and all the other Zambians enjoy.

However, that Edgar is coming back to save PF and fight for its existence deserves questions and answers from him, as he is coming back to a party that has now devolved into factionalism and he bears blame for such a reality, as this is one man through his own stooges in PF who made sure that the party did not hold a convention to replace him the moment he resigned from the PF presidency. Those who are politically oriented know that Edgar did not quit active politics. Even the letter of resignation he submitted to the government was fake, designed to hoodwink Zambians into believing that he had quit politics, when in fact not. Edgar has always been a political ‘snake’ in the grass, a man who does not mean what he says, and he and his minions have been forced to come out of hiding because their ill-motives have been seriously exposed.

For two years, the PF central committee has been discussing going to the convention and made people pay huge sums of money to the tune of K200,000 per presidential candidate viewed as some sort of deterrent for a certain class of people from exercising their intraparty democratic rights, as Edgar was maneuvering in the background to keep the seat he said he had vacated from empty.

It’s just utter disrespect for other human beings that Edgar made adults pay all those sums of money, including mandating them to spend precious time discussing matters which he and his stooges knew were going nowhere? So the PF suspended party chairman Davies Chama and its three members of parliament, Miles Sampa, Robert Chabinga and Davison Mung’andu for merely advocating for the party to go for the convention and speaking against Lungu coming back to lead the PF? And then Lungu says he’s coming back to save the party against the undemocratic moves against it? So, we wonder who Edgar is deceiving when he says he’s coming back to fight for democracy. It’s just utter nonsense!

It’s just saddening that Edgar is still as arrogant and anti-democratic as he was during the time he ruled this country. Yes, an evil fight has been unleashed on the PF which is threatening the very existence of the party. But who created that vacuum which provided room for wolves to take advantage of the situation to try to obliterate the PF? Wasn’t it Lungu and his minions? If he knew he wanted to continue as PF president why did he pretend to resign? Why allow the party to degenerate to this level where there are now two factions? If he had just stayed on without portraying that pretentious posture, there wouldn’t be political confusion where wolves are using state machinery to destroy the biggest opposition party in the country.

It is sad that Edgar has learnt nothing from that humbling defeat he suffered at the hands of Hakainde Hichilema in 2021. If he were a wise man he would have learnt by now that he was rejected on account of many things, chief among them, intolerance, caderism, poor leadership and anti-democracy he tried to entrench in the country. So how does he claim to want to come back to fight for the same democracy when he failed to live up to the same during the time he held office and has continued on the same trajectory even outside office? Isn’t the PF in this political quagmire right now because of Edgar?

Edgar is coming back to a party that is involved in legal battles for its own survival. Legal battles which would have been avoided if he just quit pretending for once. The man is not as humble and honest as his appearance, or as he projects to appear. The same opposition leaders he is asking to work with now were victims of his intolerance when he ruled this country, chief among them Socialist Party (SP) leader Fred M’membe. He without shame destroyed Fred’s Post Newspapers mercilessly, a company Fred built over 25 years. Edgar now calls Fred his good friend and Fred returned the honour by supporting the decision by Lungu to come back. We don’t know if there is any honesty in these pleasantries. Can it have something to do with the saying ‘My enemy’s enemy is my friend?’

Maybe it is just this vicious cycle where politicians continue to take the Zambian people for granted.

In an ideal society, any opposition leader would first interrogate Edgar’s political comeback because going by what has been happening in PF, Edgar has not changed. He is still the same pretentious Edgar. He is still the same pretentious Edgar who has been fighting against democracy in PF for the past two years after he lost office. If a man without power can show such worrying signs, one wonders what will become of them if entrusted with power again.

Therefore, as Lungu comes back into the political ring, we expect that he is going to provide concrete answers in terms of telling Zambians how differently his party would be run now and if it were to be entrusted with office again, against the evils which angered Zambians so greatly that they ended up removing him from office.

Much as Edgar is welcome to the country’s political life, he should be ready to provide answers to the most critical questions from Zambians and hope he has a backbone to provide answers, and we hope he will be available to take questions from us and the Zambian people on matters of public importance.

We also guarantee that we shall fight with him and for him if the state tries to impose undemocratic and other mischief against him for merely participating in active politics, save those linked to his eligibility and the constitutional penalties vis-à-vis his status now as an active politician.
