After all has been said and done, Zambians from all walks of life today get to decide their destiny for the next five years.
Voting is one of the most sacred and powerful rights a citizen could ever enjoy, as it is the main channel through which a citizen gets to a realisation that power indeed lies with the people and not the leaders. However, this powerful position comes with its own pros and cons, in that with it you can elect a bad or good leader, whose decisions, works and deeds you will have to live with and can only be in a position to have an effective say on after five years.
Therefore much as that right is powerful and places you in a position of authority over the ones you call leaders, that power is however worthless if not utilised to participate in your civic duties.
And as you head to various polling centers today please vote wisely, by voting your conscience and not by mob psychology. Reflect deeply before deciding on the reasons why you are voting for a particular leader. Do you have confidence that that leader can steer this country towards its collective developmental and noble goals? Are they people you can entrust your future and those of your children to and remain confident that they will deliver to yours as well as national aspirations? Are they humble enough that if they made mistakes they will immediately and easily accept correction from the citizens who are their true bosses? Are they people you can trust that they will use the position given to them for the greater benefit of the country and not to massage their egos? These and many answers require your deepest and honest reflections, because once you make that decision because mob psychology demanded so, today it might seem more appealing going with group demands, but its offshoots will affect you alone tomorrow.
However, after all is said and done, remember that you are electing men into positions of authority. And man has his own weaknesses, no matter who you will vote for be rest assured that they will make mistakes, probably the only distinction is to what degree those mistakes will be made, but mistakes will surely be made. No wonder the Bible says in Jeremiah 17:9-10 that “The heart isdeceitful above all things,And [a]desperately wicked; Who can know it?10 I, the Lord, search the heart, /test the [b]mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.” Perhaps this is the only premise we all agree on as we head to our various polling centers, that no matter how honest a leader can be, mistakes are guaranteed to be made, because leaders are men just like each one of us voting for them today. Therefore it’s incumbent upon the electorate to vote for the leader they think will work towards minimising their weaknesses and mistakes while working their lungs out to seek the greater national good. But that choice is in your hands.
The future of this country is at stake. Go out in numbers therefore and choose your mortal man, whose decisions, deeds and works you will have to live with for the next five years. If you are in a position to vote but choose to stay home, do not complain when a leader that is elected is not to your liking. All the best as you head to the polls to vote for your mortal man.
