ZESCO Limited has launched the Net Metering Program, set to commence on August 1, 2024, to boost renewable energy adoption in Zambia.
Company spokesperson, Matongo Maumbi stated that this initiative was aimed at promoting the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources among ZESCO’s customers.
Maumbi, stated that the net metering was designed to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources among it’s customers, allowing them to generate their own electricity and feed any excess power back into the grid.
“The Net Metering Program will allow customers, known as “prosumers,” to generate their own electricity from renewable energy sources, such as solar, and feed any excess power back into the ZESCO grid.This system will enable prosumers to offset their electricity bills, effectively reducing their energy costs,” he stated.
Maumbi, stated that prospective prosumers should have Grid-Tied Inverters to ensure high-quality of supply.
“ZESCO encourages customers to join this innovative program to save on electricity costs and contribute to a sustainable future for Zambia,” stated Maumbi.
He highlighted the benefits of Net Metering which included, cost savings as customers would generate their own electricity and receive credits for excess power.
“Other benefits include environmental impact, energy independence and economic growth via creation of jobs in renewable energy installation and maintenance,” stated Maumbi.
