Zesco has thanked Zambians for their patience during these difficult times of load shedding, and announced that three ministers will tour some hydropower stations today to appreciate the water levels on electricity generation.
“The Cabinet Ministers participating in the visit are: Hon. Eng. Peter Kapala (MP), Minister of Energy, Hon. Mike Mposha (MP), Minister of Water Development and Sanitation and
Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa (MP), Minister of Information and Media. The tour will focus on two key hydropower stations. The Kafue Gorge Power Station in Namalundu with an installed 990MW generation capacity and Kariba North BankComplex in Siavonga with an installed generation capacity of 1080MW,” Zesco stated. “This visit comes amid Zambia’s current power deficit, caused by critically low water levels in hydro power generation reservoirs.”
Zesco attributed the reduced electricity generation to the El Nino, stating that as of May 19, 2024 the country’s power deficit stood at 750MW.
The utility company stated that the ministers would address a media briefing following the briefing to update the country on the current hydropower situation and mitigation steps that the government is taking to address energy sufficiency and reliability in the immediate, short, medium and long term.
“The ZESCO Board and Management would like to thank the nation for its patience in these difficult times,” stated Zesco.
