2 hospitalised after truck flips, spills 28 tonnes of cooking oil

An over speeding truck flipped over on Saturday evening in Kapiri Mposhi, spilling over 28 tonnes of cooking oil leaving the driver and a passenger hospitalised.

Central Province Police Commissioner Roy Kashimba confirmed the development, adding that the accident happened on Saturday evening owing to excessive speeding by the driver.

“The Kapiri Mposhi traffic department has recorded a serious road traffic accident which occurred last night at 21:00 hours opposite Kapiri Breweries along the Great North Road. Involved was the driver male Emmanuel Chuma aged 46 of Lusaka, who was driving a Freightliner truck registration number BAF 4130/ALH 4296T property of Saibaba of Lusaka,” Kashimba stated. “He was driving from South to North direction with two passengers aboard while loaded with 28 tonnes of containers and buckets of cooking oil which have since gone to waste. The accident happened when the driver due to excessive speed lost control of the vehicle and overturned on the left side of the road. Due to the impact, the driver sustained a fractured left arm while the other passenger male Wisdom Mashinga, aged 36, of Buchi Township in Kitwe sustained chest pains.” 

He said that both the driver and the passenger are currently admitted to Kapiri Mposhi district Hospital. 

“One passenger escaped unhurt but the motor vehicle had its horse extensively damaged and the left part of the trailer deformed. Unknown number of containers and buckets of cooking oil were also damaged,” stated Kashimba
