National Union of Miners and Allied Workers president Saul Simujika has implored the government to ensure that safety standards are put in place in the mining sector.

In an interview, Simujika explained that the escalating cases of mine accidents in the country are worrying.

He said that the continued occurrences of mine accidents in the country called for worry.

“We are therefore calling on the government; through the department of mine safety department, to intensify, enhance mine standards activities in all mining sites,” Simujika said.

He said there was a need for the government to invest heavily in mining safety in order to avert future calamities in the mining industry.

“And as a union, going forward, there is need for the government, again; through the department of mine safety department, to enhance capacity building in human resource. There’s need for the mining industry to invest in mine safety standards,” said Simujika.
