President Hakainde Hichilema has thanked the people of Eastern Province for ignoring what he said was a tribal and divisive campaign in giving him 49 percent of the votes, from where his opponent Edgar Lungu hails from.
Speaking in Chipata, President Hichilema said his government wants to work in a way that will demonstrate fairness and equity across the country.
“But before I go far because I don’t want to stay long, nifuna kuonga, Taonga chomene, for what the people of Eastern Province did. On 12th August you ignored a divisive campaign, the tribal campaign that was waged right here,” President Hichilema said, saying the people chose unity instead. “Despite all the negativity and violence you the wise people of this Province voted for this President. You gave us 49 percent of the vote.”
