Mweetwa’s threats against Bishop Msipu

By Daily Revelation Editor

“Is fertilizer at K250? Fuel, the currency, load shedding?” president of the National Diocesan Priests in Zambia Father Augustine Mwewa asked. “They were so intelligent that they even mentioned rivers that do not exist. They have failed to tap water for four years.”

Fr Mwewa, like many other introspecting Zambians is wondering why nationals are buying a 25kg bag of mealie-meal at over K340 as opposed to the K50 they were promised before the 2021 general elections by President Hakainde Hichilema.

We are also sure that Fr Mwewa is excruciatingly agonising on why Zambians are buying one liter of petrol at K35 in their automobiles, as opposed to the K13 they were promised, why their electricity has become more expensive since 2021 when they were promised the opposite, by the supposed visionary leadership of Hichilema, which denounced all who came before him as lacking the vision to run this country ably.

Hichilema projected himself as the man who was going to solve all Zambia’s problems in the ‘Bally will solve it’ fashion, with everything yielding to his out of this world abilities, where no mountain was going be too high to surmount. Literally, Zambians were promised a world which only dreams could ever dream of. ‘Bally’ was going to use all the expertise he had earned in running Grant Thornton and other big corporations, including advising the government on privatisation, to the grandest stage of running an entity called Zambia.

He said he was going to run the country in such a peculiar manner that would leave the opposition with no option but to clap along to his successes. Hichilema is now almost four years into his reign, and it’s fair to say that most fundamentals have worsened under his watch, especially the skyrocketing cost of living. Let’s wait and see, he might just have some cards up his sleeves that might just miraculous turn everything upside down, in this penultimate year before the Zambian people give a verdict on his first term.

If Hichilema is really interested in turning things around, he will do well to listen to all the voices, including the Church. The last thing he wants is to allow himself or his lieutenants to start picking fights with the stakeholders who are simply reminding him about his own promises, and raising criticism in the manner he is handling certain matters.

One such example is where Information minister and UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa warned during a recent briefing that the ruling party would isolate Bishop Msipu of Chipata Diocese, from the Catholic Church, and deal with him as an individual, for criticising the UPND administration over its failure to deliver on its promises because they knew that the Bishop’s views were personal and did not represent the Catholic Church.

In his recent Homily, Bishop Msipu had challenged the UPND government to tell Zambians what it had achieved in the last four years, among other issues.

People like Bishop Msipu are the ones Mweetwa should be listening to more often, as these are people who are everyday interacting with the people, and have the platform to channel people’s feelings to their servants in government.

He must consider Bishop Msipu’s homily as a favour, in that there are people who love this government so much that they are ready to tell it the truth, as opposed to those who sing praises when they can clearly see that someone needs correction so save them from failing.
