Wedson Nyirenda has paid tribute to the late SuperSport presenter Phumlani Msibi who passed away late last week.
The 58-year-old South African broadcaster passed away on Friday after a short illness.
In 2011, Msibi featured Nyirenda on his famous SuperSport show Mzanzi Legends where the Zambian coach was interviewed on his playing days in South Africa at Kaizer Chiefs and Hellenic.
In an interview on Saturday, Nyirenda described Msibi’s death as a huge loss to sports broadcasting.
“Early morning today (Saturday)I woke up to a rude shock. I switched on my TV to check on the Club World Cup highlights which I missed last night, only to be greeted by the heavy news that my brother Phumlani Msibi is no more,” Nyirenda said.
He said he was so shaken because he had not heard anything about his sickness or anything.
“Phumlani was a great driver of many programs at Supersport and he did his job with great passion and professionalism. I remember him calling me some years back that he would like to host me on Mzansi Legends program. And that was the program for the elites that have graced the PSL football. I was so humbled and received the invitation with both hands. All was well arranged and I flew to South Africa,” he said.
“I enjoyed the program especially that he lined up well for me were spot on and brought great memories of the Amakhosi (Kaizer Chiefs) and Hellenic Days. The man was so good at what he was doing. The football family especially the players who he brought to the limelight through his programs shall miss him.”
Nyirenda sent his deepest condolences to the Msibi family, Supersport, and all sports-loving families.
Msibi not only presented the football side of things at SuperSport.
He came from a boxing background and also anchored major boxing events and programs for the South African-based pan-African sports satellite broadcaster.
