Zambians want clarity, assurance from HH’s speech

By Daily Revelation Editor

President Hakainde Hichilema will today address the nation when he opens Parliament.

This could well be the last opening of Parliament Hichilema will ever address if Zambians vote him out of power in 2026, or the first of the six he will address if he manages to win re-election next year for his last term ending 2031.

This, therefore, will be a crucial opening of Parliament which the President should address with sobriety and deeper reflection.

While Hichilema is never shy of boasting and praising himself on some of his achievements, which are many actually, he sometimes gets lost in the occasion such that he fails to reflect and admit on his failures, or things he has failed to accomplish during the four years he has been in power. This to some appears like a President who is insensitive to admit his own costly omissions which may have had a telling effect on the country.

We therefore, urge the President to approach this speech with all the sobriety, clarity, modesty and humbleness he can muster. We are sure that Hichilema will highlight his many successes, which are many actually, and which his critics may attempt to minimise at all cost. Regardless, we urge him to highlight those successes. But not just highlighting on them we expect him to tell the nation how he hopes to improve upon them for more effective service delivery to Zambians.

But rather than highlighting the successes, we expect Hichilema to appreciate and admit his many failures which have actually been very costly. Zambians expect him to provide concrete explanations and a clear and sustainable path, and solution on important matters such as the crippling load shedding, which is a source of pain for millions of Zambians daily, the acrimonious constitutional making process that his government still wants to force through Parliament despite very clear opposition from Zambians, threats on the enjoyment of people’s freedoms of association and democracy, as well as the impasse over the burial and repatriation of his late predecessor and nemesis Edgar Lungu.

Further, despite some claimed improvements in economic recovery, the same has not filtered through to the general populace who continue to endure some of the highest cost of living since the founding of this country. Zambians expect the Head of State to address all these pertinent matters with honesty and sobriety.

As earlier stated, this will be his final opening of Parliament or the first of six to come on account of the 2026 elections and the consequences which come with elections.

The President should also use this occasion to assure the nation that his administration will work towards ensuring a peaceful, free and democratic election whose outcome will reflect the aspirations of the Zambians people. We expect him not to dismiss the concerns that are being raised already that people in some regions of the country will be affected to register as voters on account of the defective national registration cards that were issued to them. His government must seriously look into that to avoid cries of unfairness in the election. Hichilema himself will be proud to get re-election through a transparent, free, fair and democratic election that reflects the will of Zambians.

However, despite the crucial period at which this address will be delivered, we are very sure that most Zambians will not have the privilege to watch the address on their television sets and radios on account of the terrible load shedding Zambians are enduring right now. Of course, there is online streaming in this advent of social media, but the same is usually unreliable for most Zambians due to the poor service provided by the service providers, who have found the perfect excuse of using load shedding to explain away their mediocrity.

Government iyanganepo pankani ya electricity so that many Zambians can follow through on the live proceedings for timely consumption of information.
