President Hakainde Hichilema has set growth as the cornerstone of his second and last term of office.
During his inauguration speech on September 01, 2026, President Hichilema said he welcomed the support of those who voted for him with a clear understanding of the mandate placed on his shoulders.
He also said he respected and valued those who voted for his opponents as democracy does not require people to agree on everything.
”Whatever our choices we remain one people,” President Hichilema said, adding that those who voted against UPND were not enemies but fellow Zambians.
Let us face it, things were not as rosier as the President and his supporters might want to often project them as this country witnessed years of blackouts, high prices in fuel, mealie-meal and most commodities. Generally, the cost of living was high for most Zambians during his first time. Therefore, when anyone tries to dismiss these glaring facts then they are just being senselessly defensive. Some would say uku kubula amano!
But when when President Hichilema said that in his first term he worked to successfully restructure debt and managed to stabilise the economy, and that international reserves had reached their highest level since independence, with the inflation figures at their lowest in 8 years, that is true, again anyone who tries argues against these acts just because of their dislike for Hichilema, then they are just being senseless and unreasonable.
But we like the fact that the President has acknowledged the harsh high cost of living in the country.
”We know many of our families have issues with the cost of living and that the benefits of our stabilisation have not yet been felt at every level,” President Hichilema said.
The President said he would push for diversification in mining, tourism, energy, infrastructure and other sectors, all in the efforts towards tripling the economy.
Zambians are all expectant that the diversification would result in the ultimate reduction in the cost of living. When economic fundamentals improve in the economy, the same should lead towards improvements in the cost of living and improved economic and socio conditions of inhabitants.
Improved tourist arrivals must result in more incomes for operators, increased employment and improved salaries for employees. Improved conditions in the mining sector must not just result in the expropriating of incomes and profits by multinationals. The multinationals surely deserve increased revenues from their investment, but those improvements must result in improved revenues for Zambians and the government, increased employment and a firm participation of Zambians in the sector. There should be a fair tax system that does not result in mining corporations enjoying more tax holidays but improved taxes so that Zambians can also benefit from their resources, especially during these periods when main export earner, copper is enjoying historically high prices.
Above all, we are alive to the many grievances that arose from the election period and the same must continue to be discussed so that they do not happen in future again. For instance, it must never occur in this country that court systems will be closed again to stop those in the opposition from filing in their petitions, or that the counting and announcement of results will be suspended at some point during an election. However, those matters can still be discussed while channelling the collective efforts towards national building. And the person who is mandated with national building right now is Hakainde Hichilema. He deserves every support he can get to steer the nation towards the goals that have been set.
