‎Nkandu on non-members poking noses in UPND convention

By Daily Revelation Editor

‎Youth and Sports minister Elvis Nkandu says people who are not members of the UPND must not poke their noses into the affairs of the ruling party as to when they would hold a convention before the 2026 general elections.

‎Nkandu, who is deputy UPND spokesperson, said the only people who should be worried about when the party will hold its convention are its members.

‎”The people that should get worried are the members themselves. So, those that are not members they should not poke their nose into our business. We know what we are doing. We understand what the constitution entails. We know when, and how we can go about it,” said Nkandu.

‎While the UPND convention is an internal party affair to be conducted by the party internally, however, it happening and how it would be conducted is of public interest. And this should demand all the people of Zambia poking their noses into the matter.

‎Generally, Zambians must poke their noses to ensure that all the political parties conduct their internal party conventions or conferences, and that they do so in a fair, credible, just and transparent manner that should engender and enhance intraparty democracy.

‎We say so because the manner political parties conduct their internal processes creates an impression of how they would conduct national elections. If a political party engages in systems that enable some candidate to win an unfair election, or if some candidate refuses to concede an election that was conducted fairly, they are likely to transmit the same to the national level in general elections. This explains some of the reasoning behind why any intraparty election should attract the attention, or noses of all the Zambian people.

‎The other reason is that constitutionally, all the political parties have been mandated to conduct internal elections during a certain timeframe. And the fact that the same has been enshrined in the national constitution, explains why the public should show interest in the conduct of internal party elections.

‎Therefore, when Zambians ask Nkandu or the other politicians about when they would conduct internal elections, it’s not that they are poking noses into anything for unjustifiable reasons. No! When they do so it means that they are reminding Nkandu about the constitutional and public requirements that the UPND is obligated to. And this is not just about UPND members, but the whole Zambian populace in general.

‎We believe that six months before the August 13 general elections, we should be hearing about plans for the convention in the UPND and possibly the names of people who wish to challenge President Hakainde Hichilema for the presidency, and those vying for the other national management committee positions, for instance.

‎And this should not just be restricted to the ruling party alone. Zambians must be hearing about conventions in the other political formations as wel. We are alive to the fact that some already held their conferences, while others are still discussing plans and modalities of holding them. But for the others, it is still quiet.
