Colonel Panji Kaunda says he is positive the country is in good hands to see it through the current challenges, saying “at least we are not in the hands of drunkards.”

Speaking with Daily Revelation, Col Panji said he is positive Zambia has a leader in President Hakainde Hichilema to see the country through the several challenges it is facing, including the drought, which is threatening food security for next year.

“The President is a farmer, he knows what happens when things like this happens. I am sure they are planning. I am positive we are in good hands. At least we are not in the hands of drunkards,” he said.

Col Panji said there was a minister of Agriculture, who is an agriculturalist, Mtolo Phiri, whose duty it was to advise the head of state and the people on what they should be doing in view of the erratic rains.

He said even at a personal level, people must begin to make decisions to change what they should be growing, by considering growing things like cassava, millet and sorghum, which do not require enough water to grow as compared to maize.

Col Panji further said going forward, the country will need to invest into a lot of irrigation schemes through construction of little dams around the country.

Asked if he felt the drought which is threatening would hamper the President’s efforts at economic recovery, Col Panji said a leader is judged when things are difficult, saying in the army where he comes from, a real captain is seen when leading soldiers in the battle field with bullets flying around.

“This is when we shall see the caliber of President we have…but I am positive we are in good hands,” said Col Panji.
