When Alliances become a circus!

By Daily Revelation Editor

The alliances and proposed alliances in the opposition are actually adding more opposition fragmentation than responding to the actual call for unity.

‎The country has witnessed various alliances coming on the scene in the recent months, which now appear more like a circus, than a genuine effort by the opposition to join ranks.

‎We had the Tonse Alliance first, which got bogged in internal squabbling with various power centres claiming ownership. The same came about after the Brian Mundubile faction from the PF joined others in expelling the PF faction that was led by Given Lubinda. Ironically, while the Mundubile faction participated in ‘expelling’ the PF of Lubinda, they at the same time maintained that they were the PF themselves.

‎The squabbling over the Tonse ownership only ended when this time around the Lubinda led PF formed what they called as the PF Tiyende Pamodzi Alliance.

‎In the midst of the Tonse squabbling, another alliance by the name People’s Pact was also formed.

‎Now we have another pact called the 4th Republic that has just been announced, with many others still to come. We also hear that there are ongoing talks between the PF led by Makebi Zulu, who recently took over from Lubinda, with Harry Kalaba’s Citizens First (CF). We are not sure what shape or form that arrangement will take, but it also adds to the ongoing intrigue.

‎Of course, what can’t be dismissed is that among the various arrangements there are some that may offer potent competition to the ruling UPND ahead of the elections. But the potency level could actually be more enhanced if all these groupings that are forming up competed in the elections as one unit.

‎Clearly, while those in the opposition may claim that they are responding to people’s cries by forming these alliances, however, that is very far from the actual reality. What is being witnessed is an effort by the various power centres in the opposition to concentrate power to themselves by joining hands with weaker parties in some sort of alliances. We are not seeing any effort by those that may be considered as serious contenders in terms of coming together to seek the way forward, except in very few and rare circumstances.

‎This has made us to draw the conclusion that rather than bridging opposition divides, the happenings are actually creating more rifts in the opposition, where various power centres feel a sense of entitlement by congregating smaller parties to themselves in some sort of alliances.

‎What is likely to emerge from this is that some groupings will get more traction from the Zambian people, who have over the years managed to sieve through the confusion. People will migrate towards a grouping they feel will offer better competition to the ruling UPND as an alternative. Watch the space!
