The President does not cease to be a human being without preferences where he should stay, says State Counsel John Sangwa.
Speaking with Daily Revelation, Sangwa said people were talking about the fact that President Hakainde Hichilema should move into State House, but that the country needed to engage into more intelligent discussions, saying one did not cease to be a human being with preferences just because they were a president.
He said there wasn’t even a law prescribing that one should live in State House once elected into office.
He wondered who had done the mathematics to determine that living in State House was cheaper than residing at Community House in New Kasama. However, Sangwa said if the math were done and it was discovered that the cost of living in State House was cheaper than living in community house, then the balance must be paid by the President, “but you can’t curtail him because he’s still a human being with his own preferences.”
“What we want is for him to perform,” said Sangwa.
But on arguments that the daily movements to and from New Kasama were inconveniencing other road users, Sangwa said no one had done any cost implication on that one too.
He said if it really mattered to the people that the head of state must live in State House, then the country could intelligently discuss how to come up with a law to compel Presidents to live in State House.
