KAPIRI COUNCIL DESTROYS OVER 500 KGs OF MEAT

Kapiri Mposhi Town Council has destroyed over 500 Kilograms of assorted rotten meat seized from local butcheries.

The meat including beef and pork which, was being sold to members of the public was confiscated from butcheries in Riverside compound in an operation by health inspectors from the council after a tip off from members of the Public.

Kapiri Mposhi Town Council Public Health Inspector, Happy Sikaonga, told the media that the council has noted with concern the growing trend of some food premises that include restaurants and butcheries in the district selling expired meat products to members of the public, saying the local authority has intensified inspections to rid the area of the practice.

Sikaonga warned perpetrators office prosecution, stressing that selling of food that is unfit for human consumption goes against the Food Safety Act Number 7 of 2019 and the Public Health Act Chapter 295 of the laws of Zambia.

“We received information that some butcheries are selling rotten meat and we have since managed to seize a total of 512 kilogrammes of assorted meat which we condemned and destroyed by burning,” Sikaonga said.

Sikaonga has since advised members of the public to desist from buying and consuming rotten food products, warning that consuming rotten meat can result in many health complications and even death of consumers.

” We want to pass a warning to food premises, be it a butchery or restaurant or any other shop, that have a tendency of selling expired, tainted or rotten or any food items that are not fit for consumption. We want to warn you that the law will soon catch up with you,” Sikaonga said.
