Acting secretary general in Science and Technology minister Felix Mutati’s MDC party, Joyce Musenge, says her party is not effective because of too much indiscipline within its ranks.
Asked on assertions from some party leaders who have spoken to Daily Revelation and have complained that their party was ineffective due to Mutati’s continued service in the UPND administration, as they have even failed to participate in elections, Musenge said the people saying that are those who were unhappy and wanted to continue causing divisions.
Asked on the fact that they were expressing anger in the manner the party has gone about handling affairs, Musenge said it was only about one decision as there has been indiscipline and that “they know what they have been doing.”
The party’s politburo recently dissolved the party’s Lusaka provincial committee and district committee following a meeting held on November 22, 2022. Daily Revelation has also learnt that vice-president in charge of administration Sherry Thole has also be ostracized from her position.
Musenge stated that the politburo resolved that all structures which require strengthening at the provincial and other levels should be dissolved and be reconstituted
“And the party is not effective because of their indiscipline. I even can tell who it is. The party has not been effective because we want to make sure, I mean Lusaka is a heartbeat of the country,” Musenge said later in an interview with Daily Revelation.
But asked on the rivals arguments that the party has not been effective on account of Mutati continuing to serve in cabinet, Musenge said this was not the first time the party has had Mutati in government as the same happened when they were in an alliance with the PF.
“It does not stop us as a party and them at that level because they are looking for money. It doesn’t stop them from going round and talking to the members and mobilizing. The problem is that they are looking for money. If they think they are not getting enough that is where the anger is. There is no way, Mutati has never come and said you cannot mobilise because I am in government. He has never said that,” Musenge said.
About not participating in any election, Musenge said when the party called for aspirants to stand in the 2021 general elections, everybody who was participating was saying the party should fund them, saying with that situation where the party is required to fund everybody who is standing the party has to look for money.
Asked if Mutati was the sole party funder, Musenge refused to respond to the question, saying that was an internal matter.
But asked on assertions that people like herself were defending Mutati because of the finances he brings to the party, Musenge said those were “their opinions.”
“We want to strengthen the party that’s why we have said no we have to start reorganizing at those levels and we just started with Lusaka,” Musenge said.
Musenge said she still held hope that her party would one day be a ruling party in the country as that was the very reason why they are a party, however, adding that people could still participate in governance even without the presidency.
But asked how they hoped to mobilise their party as they do not even contest elections, Musenge said they were participating by supporting alliance partners, saying participating in elections was not just about fielding candidates as there should be an assurance that the candidates being field were candidates who were likely to win.
Asked for rate the UPND alliance’s performance in government, Musenge said if they were unsatisfied they would have already left.
Asked if by that statement she was implying that her party was satisfied, Musenge said she did not see the need to respond anymore.
