TAZARA has adjusted passenger train services upwards due to the weakening Kwacha and the Tanzanian currency against the major convertible currencies.
In a press release made available to Daily Revelation, the fares have been adjusted upwards by 12 percent.
“Due to the escalation of operating costs and the continuous reduction in the exchange value of the currencies both in Tanzania and Zambia over the years, it has been deemed imperative to adjust the passenger train fares upwards. Therefore, the base fares for the Express and ordinary Passenger Trains have been adjusted upwards by twelve (12%),” stating however, that in order to cushion the impact on the travelling public, the fares will be adjusted gradually by six percent (6%) with effect from January 23, 2023 and again by six percent effective April 23, 2023.
TAZARA argued that despite that, the company remains committed to providing the safest, most reliable and cost-effective means of travelling between and within Zambia and Tanzania.
This is contained in a statement made available to Daily Revelation by TAZARA head of public relations Conrad Simuchile.
