Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) board chairperson Musa Mwenye says it’s an anomaly that although ministers of government are required to declare their assets every year, there has never been any single statutory requirement for the President of this Republic to declare his/her assets annually.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Mwenye stated that the country must become serious about regulatory frameworks if it is to fight corruption.
“It is an absurdity that although the commissioners and staff of the Anti corruption commission are required to declare their assets and liabilities periodically(and we have done so), there is no single legal requirement for the Permanent secretaries, procurement officials and regulatory officials to declare their assets, although they control millions of dollars of our moneys,” Mwenye stated. “It is a further anomaly that although ministers of government are required to declare their assets every year, there has never been any single statutory requirement for the President of this Republic to declare his/her assets annually or at all (although presidential candidates are required to declare their assets to the Electoral commission of Zambia).
“If we are serious about fighting corruption, we must become serious about the declaratory framework and life style audits of various government officials.”
