The Kapiri Mposhi Local Authority has directed all meat traders in the area to only sell meat and meat products that certified fit for human consumption.
In a statement, Kapiri Mposhi Town Council Secretary Yombwe Chisamu warned that those who won’t comply to the directive risk being prosecuted.
“All meat traders are hereby directed to ensure that they only offer for sale meat which has been certified fit for human consumption by the health inspectors. Non compliance with this directive will lead to prosecution of the offender,” Chisamu warned.
He explained that there is an outbreak of anthrax affecting some selected districts in the country and that the disease is transmitted by coming into contact with infected animals or their products.
She also urged members of the public to take preventive measures against the possible outbreak of anthrax, by avoiding raw or uncooked meat products.
“Anthrax can be prevented by not eating raw or uncooked meat products. Not eating meat from animals that died of unknown causes,” stated Chisamu. “(Also) buying uninspected meat products and avoid contact with sick or dead animals or or their products.”
