The proliferation of consent judgments where senior UPND officials and cadres are being handsomely rewarded for having been victims of some injustice in the past must immediately be brought to a stop.
As Jackson Silavwe correctly observes, the irony of these cases is that they are being settled and compensated out of court by the Attorney General.
The most recent beneficiary from these rampant and indiscriminate rewards was Transport and Logistics minister Frank Tayali, who collected a cool K450,000 from the state that has given him the benefit of serving it as a minister.
The other time it was Bernard Nshindo, Sengel Wayo Jere, Saul Masikito and Mason Mwemba who were from being paid a “small amount” of K350,000 each plus K150,000 in legal fees.
Jackson asks how the whole state can be made to pay over K1.4 million plus of taxpayers’ money for Kaizer Zulu’s ‘crime’ of bad behavior.
The other time, President Hakainde Hichilema’s co-accused in the treason trial case were millions each.
We are wondering when this abuse of public coffers will stop as there are many out there who still view themselves as victims of the old administration and requiring compensation from the Zambian taxpayers’.
If this is the culture the UPND administration is trying to implant in this nation then we suggest that every Zambians be compensated in some way or the other, as almost everyone can complain of having been a victim of the state in sort.
We understand that some of our citizens getting some of these compensations were treated harshly and bore the brunt from the old PF administration for their association with the UPND, but there are many ways to help them, without recourse to the public treasury, which is struggling big time because of the harsh economic realities the country is going through. They can be provided with jobs for instance, at least then they will be earning whatever they will be getting in the right manner, and not the way Mulilo and his colleagues are going about it. Tayali for instance, is already benefiting massively from the public because of the job he holds as minister, and we are wondering why more should be given to him when Zambians have already rewarded him heavily.
If this is the path they have chosen, then all the freedom fighters who fought for our independence and those who faced some sort of injustice in previous administrations must be rewarded monetarily.
Zambians are right now not having the easiest of times, having to bear skyrocketing mealie meal prices which they were promised they would be buying at K50 per 25kg bags. They are having to bear historically high fuel prices at K30 per liter, historically high electricity connect fees, rapidly weakening Kwacha and high fertilizer prices among other hardships. We don’t know if they should also demand compensation from the state for spending more on things they were promised they will be getting cheaper, because this is also serious injustice on them.
The manner those in the UPND administration are going about repaying their cadres and officials is not right. There is no other way to describe this than white collar crime.
And if at all their cadres and officials are complaining about injustices against them why is there a proliferation of outside court settlements from the same people they worked with during their opposition times? If they have grievances let them follow the normal court processes, and we are sure those in the administration have faith in our court system to deliver outcomes they want, if they are really genuine with their grievances.
This day light robbery must come to an end immediately.
