Zambians yesterday came out and voted in their millions in the August 13, 2026 general elections.
Long queues at polling stations had formed up as early as 03,04 horse in the morning, as could be seen from the many videos and photos that were being posted on social media, as Zambians turned out to exercise their civic and democratic right.
By the time several polling stations were due to close at 18:00 hours many had not yet cast their votes as the queues in most places were just too overwhelming for the poll staffers. However, even with that most polling centres had managed to capture almost all the voters that had turned up despite the long queues in most centres.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced that the they would announce the final results on Monday, August 17. However, in this world of social media and enhanced mobile phone connectivity, most results would still filter through for Zambians, and indeed the contestants to have an idea on how they have performed countrywide by the time the ECZ would be announcing the final results.
With the huge turnouts recorded in most of the country, the expectation from the Zambian people would be that the will of the people would be respected by all the stakeholders involved.
It’s also creditable to the Zambian people and all the stakeholders, particularly the government, that despite a few isolated incidences, the country did not witness violence on polling day, of course at the time of writing this opinion.
Zambians have now spoken and our prayer and the prayers of all the Zambians is that their word spoken through the ballot would hold in the final outcome of these polls also.
If genuine grievances will arise along the way, we hope that they would be given a fair hearing and be accorded fair resolution. May the sanctity of the people’s choice hold.
