Kalomo-Central member of parliament Harry Kamboni has urged Mines minister Paul Kabuswe to go to parliament with a report on how the administration will stop the problem of illicit transactions the country is losing out of through the mines.

Contributing to debate on the report by the committee on budget and national planning which established that the country has been losing billions in illicit transactions in the mining industry, Kamboni said it is things like this which makes his heart bleed, urging that the county should introduce lessons on patriotism in the school curriculum.

He denounced the system where it was possible for foreign mining entities to bribe a few individuals who then made the illicit transactions possible.

Kamboni told Mines minister Paul Kabuswe “to come to parliament” on how the government intended to address the problem saying the country cannot continue talking about the same matters forever.

The report addressing the effects of illicit transactions on the budget, also recommended ways to be explored to enable locals run mines like the Konkola Copper Mine, which mine the former investor failed to run.

Shiwang’andu member of parliament Stephen Kampyongo urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to look into the issue of private airstrips around the country which might be used to illegally siphon resources out of Zambia.

Wonderful suggestion on clamping down illegal mining and resource siphoning. I pray that such action is acted upon so we can have a well regulated industry to pass on to future generations. Case in point Botswana!
