COURT ORDERS SEIZURE OF $27,473 AND K160,700 PROCEEDS OF CRIME FROM MAURITIAN NATIONAL

The Mazabuka subordinate court has ordered the seizure of US$27,473 and K160, 700 from a Mauritian national Dhiraj Dhunputh, after he was sentenced to three years imprisonment for uttering false documents and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Senior Resident Magistrate Stanford Ngobola convicted Dhunputh on 16 counts of forgery and uttering false documents and 2 counts of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime.

Magistrate Ngobola sentenced Dhunputh to 36 months imprisonment with hard labour effective November 18, 2022, and further ordered that the US$27, 473 and K160, 700 seized in the course of investigations be forfeited to the State. 

Dhunputh was a Site Construction Manager at Forges Tardieu Zambia Limited and he was arrested in Mazabuka on June 24, 2016.

In another matter, the Lusaka Subordinate Court has convicted a Trinidad and Tobago national for trafficking and importing cocaine.

Resident Magistrate Constance Kansakula sentenced Zion Sadic Janton Providence to 48 months imprisonment with hard labour effective November 17, 2022. Providence, a male aged 22 years was apprehended on October 29, 2022 at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport as he was coming from Brazil via Qatar. After searching his luggage Drug Enforcement Commission officers discovered cocaine weighing 3.793 kilograms that was concealed in the false compartments of his two suitcases.

In addition, the Namwala Subordinate Court has convicted Manfred Hatamba a former Accounts Assistant at Namwala Secondary School for theft by public servant and fraudulent false accounting involving K360, 000.

Senior Resident Magistrate Ireen Wishimanga convicted Hatamba a male aged 42 years on 36 counts of theft by public servant and 36 counts of fraudulent false accounting. She acquitted him on 1 count of money laundering.

Hatamba was sentenced to 48 months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from 9th November 2022. He was arrested on 4th November 2020 in Namwala.
