Tonse/Pamodzi alliance chairperson Sakwiba Sikota says there is “untold desperation” by President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to find whatever they can to stop Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu from contesting for elections again, owing to the ‘rapid popularity’ they have gained with Zambians.
And Sikota said the sedition case involving Mundubile and Zulu in Solwezi could not take off as lawyers for the accused were only given less than 24 hours of the matter coming up.
Speaking with Daily Revelation, Sikota said the August 2026 general elections had made it abundantly clear for all to see that Mundubile and Zulu were a serious threat to President Hichilema and the UPND, and that it was only a matter of time before they removed the ruling party from office.
”Definitely, this government has seen the popularity of the two and know if there is another election to be held the signs are very clear that they will win,” Sikota said. “There is certainly a lot of desperation on their part, untold desperation actually.”
Sikota said those in government were under extreme pressure that they have held people, some for a month and others for more than one month, and they have not taken them to court.
He said Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Gilbert Phiri should be asked if those in government were still conducting investigations, since he referred to the same a while ago when asked why those detained had not been presented before court.
”Ask them why they arrested people before investigations were finished,” he said.
He said that the matter where Mundubile and Zulu were arrested for seditious practices could not take off in Solwezi as the lawyers were given less than 24 hours notice.
He said while he was there, his representation was in favour of Zulu, but lawyers for the co-accused Mundubile were not present.
”Imagine, less than 24 hours notification that the matter was coming up and we had to travel 900 kilometers. The state has resources, helicopters, whereas we don’t have that. Less than 24 hours notice, will you deem that as being fair?” asked Sikota.
On moves ignited by those in the UPND to amend the constitution by removing term limits so that President Hichilema could contest perpetually, Sikota said those who were pushing for the same were indicating to Zambians that President Hichilema was lying when he said that Zambians did not want a third term of office.
