Republican President Hakainde Hichilema is celebrating the distribution of 25kg bags of mealie meal going at K230 being produced by Zambia National Service (ZNS).
The K230 for 25kg bag is the cheapest price Zambians can buy the commodity at, with the government announcing that it will be distributed to ShopRite chain stores around the country, which are however extremely limited.
But the K230 the President is celebrating is beyond the reach of majority Zambians, who apart from trying to put up with the expensive mealie meal, are required at the same time to fend for other expensive neccecities which are becoming more expensive due to the very high cost of living.
The highest price for 25 kg breakfast mealie meal when President Hichilema was assuming office in 2021 was K120, and during the campaigns he had promised Zambians that he would reduce the price to K50 only, which now seems like a pipedream if not an outright lie.
President Hichilema stated on his Social media pages that he took time to interact with fellow citizens today in Lusaka’s Central Business District along Cairo Road and ShopRite stores.
“It is gratifying to see that citizens recognise our efforts to reduce the price of commodities such as mealie meal, under the Zambia National Service. We will not shy away from doing everything possible and within our means, to work for our people and set our country’s economic path on the right trajectory,” stated President Hichilema. “This, however, calls for concerted efforts from all of us. We must embrace the culture of hard work as that is what our Lord, God Almighty commands us all to do in the Bible. May God bless each one of you.”
