Chama-South member of parliament Davison Mung’andu says he has misgivings on the headline and not the body of the story in the lead story of last Wednesday’s edition of Daily Revelation.
The lead story in the last Wednesday edition was titled “LUNGU NO MATCH FOR HICHILEMA – PF MP.”
However, Daily Revelation insisted to Mung’andu that the newspaper stood by the Headline going by his quoted response to the question that was asked him on how he rated former president Edgar Lungu’s chances if he were to stand against President Hakainde Hichilema in
2026, with him wondering how Lungu would defeat his successor given that he lost to him when he had all the instruments of power, which he now doesn’t have.
In his submission after the story’s publication, Mung’andu said he respects elders in his political discourse, like former president Edgar Lungu.
“I think the issue here is the interpretation. If for example you go to court most of the arguments that the lawyers argue is the interpretation of the statutes,” he said.
Later in the day, Mung’andu purportedly posted a statement in which he claimed that he was misquoted by a Chilemba who called him from Daily Revelation, and that this was the second time this person was doing
this.
However, Daily Revelation confronted Mung’andu that there was no record where he had complained about the work of this media.organization in the past, to which he agreed and said that the other complaint was directed at another newspaper.
Daily Revelation did not also agree with Mung’andu’s demand that there was going to be an apology or withdraw of what the newspaper had written, but that the newspaper would carry his concerns nevertheless.
“I realise Mr Chilemba on the second, I think it’s not you. It should be someone from News Diggers. For you for real to publish it’s the first time. On that one it was omission (on my part). I said the headline will be corrected, not in the tone that it has been written. It’s more like pitting me against the leadership,” Mung’andu said.
But Munga’andu was asked on his own response to the question about Lungu’s chances that he had all the state machinery and was removed.
In the Wednesday edition, Mung’andu stated that: “President Edgar Lungu had all the state machinery. He was a president of this country. He first has to tell us what measures he will put in place to defeat President Hakainde Hichilema now who has the state machinery in his hands. He defeated him when he had state machinery in his hands. He managed to remove him. Now that he has state machinery himself, President Hakainde Hichilema in his hands, president Lungu needs to
convince us that this is what he will put in place to ensure that he gets back power then only then can some of us be serious about his return.”
He urged Lungu to deeply reflect, saying the reality will be different if he gives in to the “abena alebwelelapo (the group saying he’s coming back).”
Responding, Mung’andu said interpretation of statements could be done in so many ways.
He said the “abena alebwelelapo” crowd were putting the former head of state in hams way as he holds no power compared to President Hichilema.
“I trust you (journalist). I know the people I give interviews to. It’s yourself and Millennium. I am very comfortable because you are professional,” Mung’andu said.
He said there were people in PF that would want to see him fought, saying there were many that were injured by his stance urging Lungu to forego the presidency and would want him to be destroyed.
Asked on the statement said to have been issued by himself where he seemed to be castigating the same journalist he was praising to be professional, Mung’andu said it was possible that when one issues a statement, someone else could add to the statement.
“What I issued is this ‘I’ve called Mr Chilemba from Daily Revelation, who has indicated that he interpreted my statement and I have clarified my issues with him. Let us wait for Friday where he will capture my words were intended to mean. It’s not to demean the former
head of state. That’s what I meant,’” said Mung’andu. “Ba Chilemba, be careful we are in a political … you are dealing with us who are in political battles.”
