I am in tears now, I shudder to think of a Zambia my children will live in with this kind of toxic politics, says immediate past principal public relations officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs Mwala Kalaluka.
Kafwaya was killed in what police described as a shootout at opposition leader Brian Mundubile’s residence in Kabulonga Lusaka. But Mundubile has dismissed the police account saying the killing was premeditated by security agencies as they also shot at others including himself but bullets narrowly escaped him and his wife.
An outpouring of grief has captured the hearts of millions of Zambians who have taken to social media to share their pain on the tragic loss resulting from police shootings.
Reacting to the same, Kalaluka decried the mocking Kafwaya’s children experienced when they demanded to know the whereabouts of their father.
”I am in tears right now. I shudder to think of a Zambia my children will live in with this kind of toxic politics. I saw the late Hon. Kafwaya’s son, now orphaned, being mocked on this blue app as he demanded to know his father’s whereabouts. So cruel to say the least. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” stated Kalaluka.
He was commenting on a Facebook post by former Post journalist Moses Kuwema who stated that Kafwaya’s life had been cut short.
”He would have been celebrating his 50th birthday on August 28, but sadly, that celebration will no longer come. Kafwaya was first elected Member of Parliament for Lunte Constituency in 2016 and went on to retain the seat in 2021,” Kuwema stated. “During his time in government, he served in a couple of ministerial positions, among them Minister of Works and Supply, Minister of Transport and Communications.”
He stated that traditionally in Zambia, when a former cabinet minister passes away, the Republican President is expected to declare a period of national mourning.
”It will therefore be interesting to see how the UPND government with characters like Thabo Kawana, Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa & their boss at Community House will handle this particular case, especially given the circumstances surrounding his death and the fact that he reportedly died at the hands of the government’s security forces,” stated Kuwema. “Will they show their faces to the bereaved family as government representatives? Whatever the circumstances, a life has been lost, and a family has been left to mourn. Of course justice will be denied for now for obvious reasons but I hope whoever is responsible for Kafwaya’s senseless killing will be held accountable someday after 2031. We shall be here God willing. May the soul of the departed former minister rest in eternal peace. 🙏🏿”
