The Constitutional Court ruling on Bowman Lusambo and Joe Malanji is a demonstration that the Judiciary is actively acting independently, says political scientist Dr Alex Ng’oma.
And Dr. Ng’oma has said that the Electoral Commission of Zambia should be more exact when making decisions.
Speaking in an interview, Dr. Ng’oma said that the Constitutional Court has shown that it has some autonomy and is capable of making decisions without pleasing anybody.
“The Constitutional Court ruling on the two (Bowman Lusambo and Joe Malanji) is a demonstration that the Judiciary is capable of making decisions without undue influence from anybody. It is a demonstration that the Judiciary is actively working independently without pleasing anybody, by interpreting the law. In a democracy, institutions of governance, generally, and in particular the Judiciary should enjoy the autonomy in their operations. This is important for democracy to thrive,” Dr Ng’oma said. “And I would like to call upon my fellow country men and women to have faith in the Judiciary.”
Dr Ng’oma also said that the Electoral Commission of Zambia should be more exact when making decisions.
“From the onset I wish to state that it was very disappointing to see the Electoral Commission of Zambia behave the way it behaved even before the two candidates could file in their nominations. An institution of governance like the Electoral Commission of Zambia should be more exact when making decisions, if they are to win public confidence,” said Dr Ng’oma.
