National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Saboi Imboela says her members were attacked UPND) members during the match past to the main arena where Independence Celebrations were taking place in Chililabombwe district.
NDC leader Saboi Imboela said her members in Chililabombwe were attacked by their counterparts from the ruling party on Tuesday during the match past to the main arena.
Imboela explained that instead of celebrating peace and unity on Independence Day, some UPND members opted to harass and victimise some political opponents who wanted to be part of the Independence Day commemoration.
She said national events such as the Independence Day celebrations should not be politicised.
“The current political environment under the UPND administration is not conducive for citizens to enjoy their freedom of speech and assembly. The Chililabombwe incidence where National Democratic Congress party members have been harassed, victimised and attacked by UPND members is a classic example of how the UPND administration is using party cadres and state institutions to victimise and silence members of opposition political parties,” said Imboela. “And as leaders of opposition political parties, we are being victimised and harassed by the UPND government on a daily basis. So there’s no political freedom or economic freedom to talk about.”
Imboela said that she will avail a detailed statement on the matter.
And efforts to get a comment from Zambia Police Commissioner for Copperbelt Province Peacewell Mweemba proved futile, as his phone went unanswered on several occasions.
