President Hakainde Hichilema has gone unopposed for the UPND presidency.
UPND chairman for election Likando Mufalali declared President Hichilema as the party president. This was after no one came forward to challenge for the party presidency.
Prompt jubilation followed the Mufalali’s announcement, with those who had gathered breaking out in dance and congratulations for the President.
New National Party (NNP) leader Pastor Nevers Mumba, who was among the many attendees, said there was no need to change the UPND party president, because President Hichilema had demonstrated he was capable.
“We stand solidly with the UPND, with the President. We came on board a long time ago because we always believed that Americans say, if it is not broken, do not fix it. We don’t think anything has gone wrong,” Mumba said. “This President has demonstrated he can lift this country from the doldrum of what we were going through as the people not too long ago, into a country which has been respected internationally today. And I am proud to call myself a Zambian because of President Hichilema.”
