Numba remains defiant in relegation fight

Zanaco coach Numba Mumamba is optimistic they will survive relegation despite dangerously sitting second from last in the bottom four relegation zone with 10 games left to play in the 2024/2025 FAZ Super League campaign.

The seven-time Zambian champions are facing the serious prospect of unprecedented relegation and on Saturday suffered their third successive defeat after losing 1-0 away to Kabwe Warriors.

Saturday’s defeat was a psychological blow because it came against Warriors, a team Numba left sitting in the top-two in January to try and save Zanaco who are camped in the bottom-four relegation zone.

Numba said in a post-match interview that there was light at the end of the tunnel despite Zanaco picking up three successive defeats.

That run of results comes after a brief two-match winning run in January that saw Zanaco post promising 2-0 and 4-1 wins over Atletico Lusaka and Green Buffaloes respectively.

“I am not very worried looking at the way the team is currently performing. I think there is a lot of progress that we have noticed as the technical bench and that is why I am saying we are not worried in terms of us surviving,” Numba said.

Zanaco have 23 points, two less than Atletico Lusaka, Forest Rangers and Nchanga Rangers who are tied on 25 points, while 13th placed Lumwana Radiants have 27 points.

“I think 10 games to go is a lot of games ahead of us. All we need is first to stay focused and continue encouraging the team so that we can come out of the relegation zone as soon as possible.”

However, despite that optimistic tone, Zanaco have lost four out of Numba’s six games in charge and in their last three games which they have all lost have failed to score but conceded 7 goals.
