Unless something out of the extraordinary happens, President Hakainde Hichilema is President of this country for the next five years.
And whether people agree with him, whether they acknowledge that he is President or not President, he remains the head of state of this country for these five years, which is actually his last term of office.
We are well aware that there are still many out there who do not acknowledge him as President and many still have a lot of misgivings about the authenticity of his re-election in the August 13, 2026 election. The fallout from that election is still ongoing, with the latest batch being a resolution adopted by the European Parliament, which denounced the post-election activities, including the closure of courts to stop the filing of the petition to challenge Hichilema’s election, and the killing of ex-Transport minister Mutotwe Kafwaya by the security wings.
Many, including ourselves, are still raising genuine questions about the conduct of the 2026 general elections and its aftermath, which has resulted in the incarceration of main presidential challenger Brian Mundubile, his running-mate Makebi Zulu and the many others connected to their campaign.
Our view is that we can continue raising those questions and demanding answers while channelling our efforts towards national development. Yes, we still have many questions around President Hichilema, but the man will still be controlling the affairs of this country for the next five years. This same man has indicated that growth will be his main policy drive during his second term. Therefore, to those who like him, and especially those who don’t like him, the push should be to see how best they can be a part of ensuring that this growth agenda succeeds.
People can still contribute towards that growth even while being opposed to Hichilema. However, the opposition should be channeled towards the core issues about Hichilema’s missteps as President. But if the opposition becomes so negative that its activities begin affecting the wellness of this country, then that should definitely be repudiated by all growth loving Zambians. We do not expect the opposition for instance to play a subservient role to the ruling UPND and become ‘yes bwanas’. We expect them to play an effective role of providing effective checks and balances on the ruling party, but not to oppose everything, even the good that the administration maybe seeking to advance in the name of offering checks and balances.
At the same time, we expect a ruling party that will have matured by now, following the earlier five years spent in office. We expect that they will be more receptive this time around towards taking on board some of the important arguments the opposition and other stakeholders will be raising about the governance of this country.
It will also be in President Hichilema’s interest to handle the many matters that are causing too much acrimony in the country right now. He needs to be magnanimous as a leader during this critical period in our country’s history on the many matters that are confronting his administration. He surely will not want to be driving his developmental agenda while being confronted with very serious issues, both locally and internationally. Consider Foreign Affairs minister Mulambo Haimbe for instance, instead of focussing on promoting economic diplomacy wherever he is, the man is having to put out fires and responding to the issues that arose during and after the general elections. Critical time that should be focussed on directing partners towards Hichilema’s policy agenda is being spent on putting out fires.
