Police have placed NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running-mate Makebi Zulu under police police custody after recording a warn and caution statements in connection with an alleged offence of treason.
Police public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi said the two were interviewed by investigators under Section 43(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
He said the investigations into the matter were continuing and that further details will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
Police interrogated Mundubile and Zulu in the just ended 2026 general elections, after they were picked up from the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.
The duo had sought refuge at the United Nations following the raid at Mundubile’s residence in which ex-Transport minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was killed by the security wings. Mundubile said he saw Kafwaya being shot at by the police, while the rounds which were aimed at him just slightly missed the target with the gunpowder only brushing his hair.
The United Nations, where the duo had sought refuge yesterday surrendered them to the police following the mediation of some Church leaders and State House.
It had been reported that under the terms of the agreement of the talks between United Nations and State House, the state pledged that they would be subjected to the rule of law and the due process of the law.
Following the military raid at Mundubile’s home in Kabulonga, which saw the killing of Kafwaya, President Hichilema accused his main challenger of allegedly forming or harbouring a militia, with intent to overthrow the government.
Fearing for their lives, the duo sought shelter at the United Nations Buildings located on Alick Nkhata road where they had been until yesterday.
Senior members of the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance, including Bishop Trevor Mwamba former law-maker, George Chisanga and Patrick Mwansa among others have been charged with treason.
