Tonse alliance parliamentary candidate in the Mandevu parliamentary by-election, Daniel Chisenga, says he has reported UPND cadres who attacked him and his supporters during his ECZ scheduled campaigns in Mandevu.
To be honest, we were not there in Mandevu to have witnessed the reported violence which Chisenga said he had reported to the police for action.
However, to hear that violence has flared up again in Mandevu is extremely worrying, because we all remember that there is a by-election in Mandevu right now because the previous poll held on August 13, 2026 was cancelled on account of the same violence. At that time, validly marked ballot papers were allegedly forcibly obtained and disposed off by unruly ruling party cadres. As we speak, no worthy action has actually been taken to arrest those who were involved in this criminality.
The fact that we are talking about violence flaring up in Mandevu this time around means that nothing at all has been done to address the matter as far as the violence is concerned. It is business as usual, yet we have institutions in this country that are supposed to ensure that such vices are actually nipped in the bad so that people can exercise their democracy in a peaceful environment. Only in banana republics where state institutions are extremely useless or even non-existent, except in name, will such vices continue unabated.
We are of the firm belief that politics should be a competition about ideas, and not about which thugs can wield their pangas or knives, or about which thugs can throw the strongest punches. The moment political competitors resort to violence is a sure way of them admitting that they do not have ideas and can only win elections through the shedding of blood. And a sure way of knowing that these thugs have the support of their masters – and probably they are even the ones sponsoring the violence using these gullible goods – is when their political masters pay a blind eye or attempt to apportion blame towards their opponents when the violence happens.
Thuggery should have no place in Zambian politics, and those who support such evil vices and fail to take a firm grip against the same should definitely have no place in seeking national leadership in this country.
