You can’t claim to fight corruption while paying a blind eye to your own

By Daily Revelation Editor

It is encouraging when countrymen, especially when party members begin raising issues about leaders in their own party.

There are issues right now where some staunch members in the ruling UPND for instance are beginning to raise issues about their own leaders and some even calling upon the investigative wings to launch investigations over what they allege as speedy accumulation of wealth by some of their own members they have served with in the party for a long time.

We of course cannot prove the veracity of some of their allegations for now, but the fact that they are speaking raises attention. But beyond just talking they must report their allegations to the investigation wings and report to the public about their actions, otherwise their assertions will just be taken as just another political game where they are just hating on the other party members who seem to be more well connected than they are. Those accused should also come out to either repudiate the allegations categorically or even state categorically how they are allegedly acquiring so much wealth within a very short space of time.

If the UPND is arresting former leaders who served in the PF administration for having property suspected to be proceeds of crime, why should they be hesitant and fail to be proactive when their own members are raising corruption allegations against their own party members?

It’s undeniable that most UPND leaders, in the government and their party have become so rich within the short period they have been in office. It is important to scrutinise that turn of events, especially in a ruling party serving under a President who claims that he is committed towards fighting corruption, past, present and future and that there will be no sacred cows in this fight. If you are arresting former leaders for possessing property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime, why are you at the same time giving a pass to your own party members engaging in similar activities? Isn’t that the ultimate hypocrisy and self-righteous posture people complain about? If you are really honest in your dealings, why are you not going after your own thieves and focusing on the thieves elsewhere?

As for the ACC, we were hopeful that they were going to operate with a renewed vigor under the UPND administration especially going by the President’s pronouncement. But we wonder why Zambians are not seeing arrests of the people being accused of wrongdoing in the UPND and amassing wealth indiscriminately in the ruling party. This Thom Shamakamba led ACC is fast becoming just another moribund institution which seems not to be able to fight the corruption connected with those in power. It is becoming an institution that claims to investigate some serving government leaders forever without any tangible outcome from the same investigations. It has become an institution that only wants to show its teeth against those in the opposition and the former leaders but folds its tail when the corruption involves current leaders.

It is fast becoming another ACC that is comfortable to be used as an attack dog by those in power against opposition opponents and those the administration wants to punish within its ranks. You can’t claim to fight corruption when you are paying a blind eye to your own corruption. If you want to remove a log in another person’s eye, start by first removing the log in your own eye.
