UKA says President Hakainde Hichilema has given Zambian workers a cruel and brutal labour day gift by increasing the price of petroleum to over K35.
Today, Zambian workers are taking part in the Labour Day celebrations taking place in different parts of the country and President Hichilema is scheduled to officiate in Solwezi.
UKA chairperson for communications Jackson Silavwe has stated that the fuel price increase announced by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) for the month May 2024 is insensitive, desperate, brutal to the people and an indication that Zambia is in a serious economic crisis.
Silavwe stated that President Hichilema and his Government have demonstrated, that they are out of touch with economic realities facing the majority of the people.
UKA has since called on President Hichilema to convene an economic indaba that would help resolve economic challenges.
“Ba HH tabomfwa nakalya! As the United Kwacha Alliance-UKA, we once again, we call upon President Hichilema and the new dawn administration, to convene an economic indaba that would make critical recommendations to the Government on defined aspects of our economy like fuel,” Silavwe stated.
He added that an economic Indaba held in national interest can provide solutions for a more resilient local economy for a prosperous Zambia.
Silavwe further state that the Government must move swiftly before people are sentenced to a life time of poverty under the new dawn administration.
