Police refutes killing illegal miners in Kasempa

The Zambia Police has refuted claims circulating on social media that two people were killed in the Dengwe area in Kasempa, as they were removing illegal miners.

Police this morning raided the area in Kasempa District where scores of illegal miners camped in search of gold.

The operation was aimed to stop illegal mining activities in the area after a two weeks gold rush.

After the operation, word went round that police had shot two individuals as they were dispersing the miners through teargas canisters.

However, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said illegal miners were removed from the site and the operation proceeded as planned without any incidents of violence or serious injury.

“The allegations of individuals being killed are entirely false and misleading. We categorically state that no such incident occurred. The operation in question was aimed at removing illegal miners from the area and was carried out successfully. At no point did our officers discharge live ammunition at individuals present at the scene,” he stated.

Hamoonga stated that the police remained committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all citizens.

“We urge the public and the media to verify information with official sources such as ourselves before disseminating it to avoid causing unnecessary panic and confusion,” Hamoonga stated.
