Our police can surely be efficient!

Police yesterday formally charged and arrested former PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri for aggravated robbery, a non-bailable offence.

In a statement yesterday, Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that the arrest of Phiri came after investigations revealed her involvement in the incident where K20,000 cash and an Infinix phone valued at K3,800, belonging to Boldwin Chilambikwa, were stolen on December 18, 2024.

If this matter involved commendation on efficiency alone, without considering all the other factors, then police definitely need to be commended for the lightning speed with which they investigated this matter. It is very good to know that our police can be this efficient when it comes to investigations. It’s barely two weeks since the incident happened, and within that timeframe they managed to conduct all the investigations, and even effected a charge and an arrest. As we speak, Mumbi is already in custody in Kawamba awaiting court appearance. We are praying that they will move with the same speed in prosecuting this matter in the confidence that they have a water-tight case, otherwise they would not have moved to effect an arrest in the first place.

Given the speed with which our police have managed to move on this matter, it therefore baffles us that there are matters that have been reported before them involving the alleged violence, or other wrongs by ruling party cadres, and even officials. It will be nice if they can explain to the Zambian people the reasons why there hasn’t been any follow ups or updates in terms of how far they have gone in investigating those matters. Could it be something deliberate on their part given that they have shown that they are actually capable of moving speedily on matters? What is holding them from moving on the same matters? Is it something of their own doing?

They need to explain lest they allow the public to speculate as Sean Tembo asserts that they are partners in crime with the UPND. Definitely, those are assertions that should not in any way be associated with our police, hence the need for them to immediately explain to the public their inertia to move on alleged offences committed by those connected to the ruling party.

In the statement announcing the arrest of Mumbi, Hamoonga “reiterated police’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served in all reported cases.”

In the same statement, Hamoonga condemned all forms of violence and criminality and urged the public to report information “related to this matter” to the law enforcement authorities. We would have surely hoped for him to have urged the public not only to report information related to that matter, but other matters involving violence, regardless of one’s political affiliation.

We would have also expected Hamoonga to use that opportunity to have informed the nation in terms of how far the police had gone in investigating all the matters that were reported to them on violence.
