Late former president Edgar Lungu is expected to be put to rest in Johannesburg, South Africa, today June 25, 2025.
A Requiem Mass is scheduled for 10:00 hours at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Hillbrow, to be presided over by Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda, who the late wished should preside over his funeral service.
According to the programme, the ceremony will be held under heightened security, with entry restricted to accredited mourners only.
Those who will attend the burial have been advised against carrying large bags to the venue.
Although the funeral programme confirms attendance by VIPs, their identities have not been disclosed and there is no indication of any Zambian government representative attending the funeral.
The program indicates that following the requiem mass, there will be a procession to a private burial procession which will take place around 13:30 hours.
A number of PF leaders, members of parliament, members and other mourners have travelled to South Africa to attend the burial.
Lungu died on June 5, 2025 in South Africa where he had been receiving medical care for close to six months for undisclosed illness.
Following the former president’s death, the government announced that the body would be brought into the country for burial but the family felt the government was reneging on the agreed positions and decided to bury the remains in South Africa.
They argued that a provisional programme that was allegedly released by the government, deviated from the agreed program which forced the family to decide to bury the late former president in South Africa.
