Failure to reduce prices despite improvements in fundamentals irks Chisebe

The Alliance Against Corruption says it is disappointed by the failure of manufacturers, wholesalers, and traders to adjust their pricing mechanisms in response to the recent decline in fuel prices, improved inflation rates, and the strengthening of the Zambian Kwacha against other currencies.

And organisation executive director Noel Chisebe has called on the government to establish a regulatory framework to monitor and control price adjustments, ensuring fairness and transparency.

He stated that the lack of adjustment had resulted in the continued high cost of living, disproportionately affecting the poor and vulnerable members of society.

Chisebe stated that this was a blatant act of corruption, where businesses prioritised profits over people’s welfare.

“When fuel prices rise, businesses quickly pass on the increased costs to consumers. However, when fuel prices drop, prices remain high, further exacerbating poverty and inequality, ” he stated.

Chisebe stated that corrupt practices in the distribution chain contributed to high prices and undermined trust in the economy.

He stated that the government must take immediate action to address these unfair pricing mechanisms and protect citizens’ rights.

“Businesses must adjust their prices to reflect the reduced fuel costs and improved economic conditions,” he stated.

Chisebe stated that the Ministry of Commerce and Trade and industry, along with related ministries, must work together to address these issues and provide relief to the poor and vulnerable.

He stated that citizens had a right to feel the positive impact of economic improvements and demanded that the government should take concrete steps to address these concerns

“The Alliance Against Corruption will continue to advocate for the rights of citizens and push for urgent intervention on the high cost of living,” stated Chisebe.
