Truth should be the only factor to base electoral decisions upon

By Daily Revelation Editor

Misinformation and disinformation is on the rise right now, especially that the election campaigns are now in full swing.

We, therefore, urge the electorate to be on the lookout to ensure that they are feeding themselves with the correct information. During election time especially, it’s important, wise and reasonable for the electorate to feed themselves with the correct information upon which they can base their votes upon. Just like in the other aspects of life, people need to have the correct information upon which to base their decisions. However, that becomes a challenge if they do not take care to verify the authenticity of the information they are hearing or reading, especially in this advent of Artificial Intelligence and social media.

We now live in a world where restraint has been thrown to the wind. A world where someone can just wake up, draft lies and falsehoods and have them sent viral via social media. The same falsehoods immediately find a home in the minds of a significant chunk of the population which instantly agrees with the falsehoods that are being peddled. The same is aided by the polarised nature of our politics where subjective political minds have taken to believing any information that paints those they support in the positive light, while painting those they don’t support in the negative. And any information, even the authentic one, which reveals the negative truth about the people they support is instantly dismissed without any aorta of verifying. However, that is not how nations which aspire to progress should build their societies.

Progressive societies are never built on lies and false imaginations. They are built upon a citizenry that is mobilised in the truth. A society which bases its decisions upon the strength of truth. You don’t built a society, or make decisions on the basis of lies. Democracy should be a battle of competing ideas based on the truth, and not based on how much one opponent can churn out lies, insults and slander against the others.

We need to become a nation that takes its civic responsibilities seriously, as elections are not just about going to the voting booths to cast the vote for the particular candidates of our choice. It’s also about us taking individual responsibility to ensure that we arm ourselves with the truth. It’s about us assessing the various candidates offering themselves for office on the basis of truth. It’s about us casting votes for candidates on the basis of the truth they say and the soundness of their promises.

And in our circle of life as a national, we must never lose sight of the fact that we are One Zambia, One Nation. The only substance that should matter in our voting is the truth and the soundness of the promises someone is offering. Tribe, region, colour, ethnicity and even the appearance of candidates should play no part whatsoever in our voting.
