Economic Front (EF) leader Wynter Kabimba says Zambians will not accept buying the staple mealie meal at skyrocketing prices.
Speaking with Daily Revelation, Kabimba said Zambians could not psych their minds to starvation, and that under first president Dr Kenneth Kaunda, they went on the streets on account of problems associated with the staple commodity.
“I don’t think there is anybody who can psych their mind to starvation. You can’t psych your mind to accept starvation because mealie meal is a staple food, and I can’t see Zambians accepting that yes it is okay to buy mealie meal at K250 because they just wont afford. So if they can’t afford I cant see Zambians saying it is okay for us to starve,” Kabimba said. “They didn’t do that under Kaunda. When mealie meal was unaffordable under Kaunda, they went on the street because there is nobody who can get used to hunger. There is nobody that can get used to starvation. So the government is sitting on a volcano. And all the revolutions in the world have not been triggered by the middle class and the elite. They have been triggered by the masses. Why? Because the masses bear hunger and starvation. And no human being gets used to hunger. So if the government thinks that the despondence which appears now can persist from the masses, it is wrong, the government is sitting on a big big volcano.”
Kabimba said the people hit most by the skyrocketing mealie meal prices are voiceless, saying they were the “wretched of this society” and that the wretched of any society had no voice.
“That’s why when they have reached breaking point they just react and they decide to speak from the street. They don’t speak using a radio platform. They don’t speak using a TV platform because those platforms are for the elite and not for the masses,” said Kabimba.
