The Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) has vowed to ensure that Vedanta meets its obligations, and remains ethical and professional in engineering operations.
In a press statement to Daily Revelation welcoming the reinstatement of the controversial mining company that failed to honour its obligations in its previous life in Zambia, EIZ wants Vedanta to deliver works that are of acceptable
standards for the benefit of the Zambian people.
“Similarly, we expect that Vedanta will ensure that all employees and Contractors that will be engaged to carry out engineering works are compliant pursuant to the
EIZ Act number 17 of 2010,” EIZ public relations manager Ntalasha Mutale stated in the press release. “As an Institution, EIZ remains committed to regulating and promoting the
engineering profession for optimal human resource and benefit to society.”
On welcoming back Vedanta, Mutale stated that EIZ was hopeful that the re-engagement will bring increased employment for local
engineering professionals, improve infrastructure and in turn lead to a social-economic revival for the country.
“The institution is further pleased to learn that Vedanta will be bringing new technologies that will enhance the engineering industry, increase output and
consequently raise revenue.
Additionally, the commitment by Vedanta to invest $1 billion in KCM development, make a $250 million payment to all local Creditors and $20 million into Corporate
Social Responsibility is so well appreciated as our members are part of the stakeholders that will greatly benefit from this,” stated Mutale. “
As a regulator however, we hope to see Vedanta adhere to the engineering standards that have been set by the institution and to follow the codes of conduct in all their
engineering works.
“Our mandate is clear as EIZ. We would like to reiterate that there are engineering
standards and code of ethics that set clear performance benchmarks and enables
innovation without compromising confidence in the engineering works achieved”.
